There are many definition of cloud computing technology. In this post, the term cloud computing refers to the process of having content or services delivered to a client computer from a host server. These services and resources also must have the ability to be reconfigured and redeployed on an as-needed basis in order for the network to be considered a Cloud network. There are many different types of cloud computing models that are all significantly different from each other. The services that are provided by Cloud computing can be classified into one of three separate models: Software as a Service (SaaS), Platfaorm as a Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). It is easy to point out popular cloud computing examples including Windows Azure, Google App Engine, Amazon EC2 and Salesforce. We’ll be going into more detail on what exactly each of these different services entails later on in the article.
According to NIST, there are several distinct qualities that define Cloud computing and help differentiate it from the traditional hosting model. The biggest difference between Cloud computing and traditional Web hosting models is that it is typically sold as an on-demand service. Typically access to the Cloud is sold by the minute or the hour, although some providers do provide monthly access. Another defining feature of Cloud computing is that it is an “elastic” service. This refers to the amount of service that a user can have at any given time, with an elastic service the user determines exactly how much of the service they receive. The final characteristic of cloud computing is that it is completely maintained by the provider of the cloud computing service. This ensures that the customer only needs access to a personal computer and an Internet connection in order to access services on the Cloud computing network.
Another important property of a Cloud is whether it is public or private. Public Clouds will sell their services to anyone on the Internet, whereas a private Cloud is usually owned by a business or organization and is limited in regards to who it gives access to. An example of a public Cloud would be Amazon.com’s Web Services. Under this service, users are able to purchase music, movies and books that they are able to access at any time and from any device with access to an Internet connection. An example of a private Cloud would be McDonald’s company Cloud that it only gives its employees access to. There is also a third, less common type of Cloud computing known as a hybrid Cloud. This occurs when resources from a public Cloud are used to create a private Cloud, such as Google’s App Engine being able to interface with Amazon’s public Cloud. Whether a Cloud is public or private, its goal should always be to provide scalable, easy access to IT services and computing resources.
